Berlin, Germany – Germany’s drug watchdog will be testing the effectiveness of its erectile dysfunction drug Viagra for men, after the country’s health ministry warned it would soon start a public health risk testing programme.
The German health ministry said it was assessing the drug for effectiveness in men with erectile dysfunction, but it said it did not think it was medically necessary.
Viagra, which is also sold under the brand name Viagra, is a treatment for erectile dysfunction, a condition where men fail to get or keep an erection long enough for sex. It’s widely used for a variety of reasons.

A similar study published in the New England Journal of Medicine found that about 30 percent of men who took the drug had a higher risk of erectile dysfunction.
“These findings suggest that the drug could pose a serious health risk for some men,” said Dr Peter Bergfeld, an epidemiologist at the University of Missouri-Columbia, who was not involved in the study.
The drug is approved by the Food and Drug Administration in the United States, Europe and Canada, but is only available under a different label to that of Viagra, which is approved in the United States by the FDA and is not covered by insurance.
The drug has been used by more than 6 million people since its launch in 1998.
